Diversity Dinners
I think the interesting thing about Pelican Rapids is when you're walking down the street, you're going to see people from so many different cultures.
- The Diversity Dinners that we're having are a way to have people meet their neighbors and get to know people on a ground level.
- I liked the variety of foods. I like to meet a lot of new people. And my kids and grandkids have all gone to school in Pelican. And I think the diversity in the school has been a wonderful thing for them, when they do leave the area and get out into the larger world.
- I have not been to like a group like this before, like this was my first time. It was good, I make like a lot of friends. Yeah, it was a special day for me.
- This is the first diversity dinner that I've been to. I've heard about them, but I haven't made to one before. One of the things I really enjoyed was watching my seven year old sit by himself at a table of people that he hadn't met before, and to have that interaction. We've all come here at various different times, but we've all come here. And so what can we learn about each other? And I feel like Pelican's done that really gracefully over the past 25, 30 years.
We're having Diversity Dinners to try to get to know our neighbors. And we're sharing food and talk and good times.
- I have been at each of the Diversity Dinners. And it has been so much fun. Every single one is different. And I've gotten to know many people in the community, which has been really exciting because you see these people walking around every day in our small community, but you don't get to know them, because you're not just gonna stop and talk to 'em on the street. But now I will, because now I know who they are. And it's been really fun.
- When I grew up in Pelican, the diversity was much, much smaller. And I really enjoy coming back to see how rich the cultures are here now. And to remember that we are all people and we all have slightly different stories, but they're all in some way linked. And that there's a beautiful thing in getting to figure out what our similarities are, even when we look different or eat different food or have different languages, that we still have some similarity. And I think that's a beautiful thing to discover.
- Yeah, one thing that I like is like all the people coming over here, and they are like good people, and I'm so glad that I have met them.
Diversity Dinners
The PR Multicultural Committee enjoyed hosting dinners once a month during the school year.
Uniting with Food to Celebrate Our Differences
This potluck-style, multicultural meal is held on the last Sunday of each month during the school year at Pelican Rapids Public Library.
During these Diversity Dinners, community members are encouraged to contribute unique food or refreshments while hearing about cultures.
The greatest hope is that by coming together to share these diverse dishes with our neighbors, we can make new friends, break barriers, and actively communicate, learn, and grow with one another. In doing this, Pelican Rapids can truly be a town built on a solid foundation of love and appreciation for the many different cultures found within our community.
